Deviations for certain ranges of the Madison River could be explained by the penetration of ground water into the stream through the river bed or by shading effects of forests closely bordering the river banks. Mixing of the geyser effluents in the Madison River was complete in the cross section. Mixing of 21 22 Discussion discharged cooling water with the water in a steam occurs quickly in streams of medium size, if the amount of cooling water is not too far from the run-off of the river, even if the velocity of the current is rather low.

It is difficult to distinguish operationally between dissolved and colloidally dispersed substances. An example may be given for aqueous iron(III). In the absence of complex formers other than OH" the solubility of ferric iron cannot exceed concentrations of ca. 1CT8 M within the pH range 6 - 9 . Since this does not appear to be in accord with the analytical findings, it has been repeatedly suggested that iron(III) is present as soluble organic iron(III) complex. Although this possibility cannot be excluded, one must be aware that the diameter of colloidal Fe(OH)3 or FeOOH can be smaller than 100 Ä , and that such colloidal dispersions may pass a membrane filter.

3 shows the results of the turbine aerators at Baldeney and Pixley Dam. At the Pixley Dam, which regulates the Flambeau River, turbine vacuum aeration is employed [22]. The representation of the results with the oxygen increase referred to the initial oxygen content as ordinate, the oxygen saturation prior to aeration as abscissa, and the temperature as a further parameter were deliberately chosen in Fig. 3. In this way the original values could be plotted undistorted. Only the saturation values according to [4] were assumed to be correct.
