The Goal – Week 7

“Without struggle, there is no strength”

This was the motivational quote for spin class this week.  As I began to meditate, this is what I saw.

Struggle

St   RUG  gle

And here’s what I thought:

“I really hate that rug in the dining area.  Why did I even buy that?  Who puts a white rug underneath a table where people eat?  Why is my family full of messy eaters?  Maybe I could move the table and clean the rug like really, really well and then I could stand it for a few more years.  Where does the word ‘rug’ come from anyway?  I bet it’s Italian.  I’ll ask Kevin.  He always knows useless nonsense like that.  I bet he could talk about rugs for an hour.  On second thought DO NOT ASK KEVIN ABOUT RUGS!  Maybe I’ll just give the rug to Goodwill.  Then go all minimalist and just have a bare floor.  Nevermind,  forgot I hate minimalism.  I like the idea of it but not the actuality.”

And then my first session on the bike was over.

Fast forward to my second session.

Ok, time to really focus. I will now breathe deep, meditate and become one with the bike.

“Are my pants falling down?  Is my underwear falling down?  ARE BOTH MY PANTS AND UNDERWEAR FALLING DOWN?  Who is behind me?  If my rear is hanging in the wind, will they tell me?  Do I want them to?  I bet I have lost so much weight that my pants are just loose.  Or possibly I stretched them out so much the elastic is shot?  I should design a line of workout pants and underwear.  A combo deal that adhere to one another.  And then add suspenders so you can just ride or run or whatever and not have to worry about falling over while tugging on your undergarments. “

And then the whole workout was over.

The moral of the story is this:  Every workout does not include some mystical mind-body connection.  When it does, it’s awesome.  It’s the main thing that keeps me coming back.  I crave it.

But sometimes you just ride the bike.

And it’s enough
